Monster Mug Workshop

Looking for a pottery project that’s playful and a little unusual? Our Monster Mug Workshop is a two-week class where students transform a wheel-thrown mug into a one-of-a-kind creature mug.

Hosted at our studio in Overland Park and serving the Kansas City metro area, this workshop focuses on sculptural details and creative expression. Each student begins with a thrown mug body provided by the studio and then builds their monster using clay additions like horns, teeth, ears, spikes, and texture.

Every monster mug ends up completely unique.

Week 1 – Build Your Monster

Students begin with a wheel-thrown mug body provided by the studio. In this session you’ll design and sculpt the character of your mug.

You’ll start by planning your monster’s personality, then build it out using clay additions. Students will sculpt and attach features like horns, ears, teeth, spikes, brows, and textures to transform the mug into a creature with its own expression.

During this session you’ll learn techniques for attaching clay securely, shaping facial features, and creating texture while keeping the mug durable and functional.

After the class, the mugs will dry and be bisque fired in the studio before the next session.

Week 2 – Underglaze & Color

Once the mugs have been bisque fired, students return to add color and detail using underglazes. This step brings the character of each monster to life.

After underglazing, the studio will apply a clear glaze and fire the mugs again to finish the piece.
