FAQ’s

Getting Started

Do I need any pottery experience to take a class?

No experience is required for our beginner classes or one-session workshops. Our instructors guide you step by step, making House of Clay a welcoming place to try pottery for the first time.

What should I wear to a pottery class?

Wear comfortable clothes that can get a little dirty and closed-toe shoes. Clay washes out easily, but we recommend avoiding anything delicate.

What if I’ve never worked with clay before?

That’s perfectly fine! Many of our students are first-timers. Our beginner classes are designed to introduce basic techniques in a supportive, relaxed environment.

Classes & Workshops

What is the schedule for pottery classes and workshops?

We offer a wide range of pottery classes, one-time workshops, and multi-week courses throughout the week. You’ll find daytime, evening, and weekend sessions to fit your schedule. Seasonal classes—like holiday ornament workshops and summer clay camps—are added regularly. Visit our Classes page to see current offerings.

What types of pottery classes do you offer?

We offer beginner wheel throwing classes, hand-building classes, one-session workshops, and special seasonal events. All classes focus on learning foundational skills while creating finished ceramic pieces.

How big are your pottery classes at House of Clay?

Our pottery classes in Overland Park typically include 8–12 students, allowing for personal instruction and plenty of time on the wheel. Smaller class sizes help beginners feel supported while giving intermediate potters room to grow.

How long are your classes?

Class length varies by offering. Most multi-week classes meet once a week, while workshops are single sessions lasting a few hours. Specific details are listed on each class page.

Are your classes beginner-friendly?

Yes. Many of our classes and workshops are designed specifically for beginners, and no prior experience is required unless noted otherwise.

Memberships

Can beginners join a membership?

Memberships are best suited for students with some pottery experience. Beginners are encouraged to start with a class before transitioning into a membership.

What does a studio membership include?

Memberships include monthly studio access, use of wheels, tools, glazes, free bisque firings, and glaze firing billed by volume. Higher-tier memberships include additional studio hours, shelf space, wheel reservations, and opportunities to sell work in our gallery.

What pottery studio memberships do you offer?

House of Clay offers three membership levels to fit different pottery needs:

  • Potter’s Apprentice – $75/month
Includes 10 hours of studio access, an assigned cubby, free bisque firing, and glaze firing at $0.05/cu in.
  • Skilled Potter – $125/month
Includes 20 hours of studio access, a 4-ft shelf, free bisque firing, and glaze firing at $0.05/cu in.

Firing & Materials

Do you fire the pieces we make?

Yes. All student work is fired in our kilns. Bisque firings are included, and glaze firings are billed by cubic inch based on the finished piece.

What clay and glazes do you use?

We provide stoneware clay bodies and a wide selection of food-safe glazes for functional ware. All materials are selected for consistency and reliability in our firing process.

How long does it take to get my finished pieces back?

Most pieces are ready for pickup within one to two weeks after glazing, depending on kiln schedules and class timelines.
